In Switzerland, medico-social establishments (EMS) and seniors' homes house vulnerable people who need continuous care. To keep them safe, these settings rely on care aides trained in first aid and resuscitation.

The first-aid requirement

The recognised care-aide course (Pflegehelfende (nationale Anerkennung), 120h theory and 12-15 practice days) includes first aid, and the FaGe federal apprenticeship covers basic life support; EMS staff must therefore be able to respond quickly to a resident emergency.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid or resuscitation certificate is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
